An introduction to Alternative Legal Service Providers (ALSPs)

Gone are the days where the traditional law firm was your only option for legal work. Today’s buyer of legal services has many more choices available to them in a much more competitive environment.

Alternative legal services providers (ALSPs) are the non-traditional companies that offer legal services as competitors to the traditional law firm.

ALSPs usually cover services such as legal process outsourcing, e-discovery and document review services and contract lawyering.

“In a short period of time, ALSPs have evolved from a relatively unknown phenomenon into a fast-growing segment that is an integral part of the legal services industry,”
Mari Sako, professor of Management Studies, Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford

At first glance, it can seem that a move to an ALSP is about cost. While this is obviously a benefit (we have helped some companies to halve their external legal spend through the use of alternative legal services providers), it’s about using specialists for each piece of work.

If you take document review work for example, we moved one client from using Magic Circle lawyers for eDiscovery work, to a specialist document review team. As well as reducing costs by 50%, the client found that the quality of work improved as the service was provided by a team who only focussed on this task and so were experts in this field.
